Important Info for Breeders

DNA samples submitted through the American Aberdeen Association are retained by Neogen for about a year, then disposed of.  Frequently, if a breeder needs an additional DNA test, it is difficult to locate the original sample and even if the sample can be found, there may not be enough of the original sample to perform the needed test.

It is important to plan ahead and, in the case of stored embryos or semen, there may come a time when a sample of the DNA of the donor cow or AI sire might be needed.  It is therefore strongly recommended that breeders keep a DNA sample in their possession for their donor cows.  If frozen semen is on hand for an AI sire, that can be used as a DNA sample if needed.  Please note that TSU’s require temperature and humidity control to be safely stored so in this case, we recommend a hair or blood sample, collected on a blood or hair card as provided by Neogen.  Please contact the office if you have any questions.
