The American Junior Aberdeen Association sponsors a Junior National Show and Competition held every year in June. Typically it is held at a different venue every year in order to make use of different educational opportunities in the area and to help make the distance accessible to juniors in different areas of the country.
Youth members compete in skillathon, marketing, ultrasound, fitting, cook-off, showmanship, barnyard races and of course…the show.
The Queen and Princess interviews and selection are conducted during Junior Nationals. Also the AJAA Board of Directors is elected for the next term.
Join us in 2020!
Make plans now to come to the AJAA Junior Nationals in Woodward, Oklahoma on June 22 – June 27, 2020.
2019 AJAA JUNIOR NATIONAL SHOW AND COMPETITIONS
Douglas County Fairgrounds, Lawrence, KS
June 25-29, 2019
Beginning on June 25thover 100 head of American Aberdeen cattle from 18 states converged at the Douglas County fairgrounds in Lawrence, KS. It’s more like a family reunion, as old friendships are rekindled and new ones are started! This year was amazing to see participation from every region in the American Aberdeen Association. We had exhibitors as young as 4, to the oldest being 21. We also had a great group of spectators all week.
As we said, it was an action packed week, a lot of activities filled our days, including showdown showmanship, team marketing and fitting, no-fit showmanship and quiz bowl. We added two new competitions this year, graphic design for the juniors and public speaking for the intermediates and seniors. The judge’s comments after the public speaking contests were” the future of the American Aberdeen breed looks very bright as the youth that participated were both very knowledgeable and articulate”. We can’t forget about Over the Hill Showmanship, I’s always a blast to see what our parents, grandparents and other mentors can come up with to show us how it’s done!
With not much time for rest we did manage to have board candidate, queen and princess interviews and at our annual meeting on Friday the new queen and princess were crowned and our 3 new board members were announced. The bright spot of the annual meeting was the great cooperation by all that attended and participated in passing our new bylaws.
The big day arrived on Saturday, as we started our show with the bred and owned and moved right along into the owned show. It’s always great to see everyone helping everyone, even though it’s a competition. Thanks to the judges that sorted through our cattle and gave us all some great pointers.
There are so many people to thank for helping us put on a great Junior Nationals. Thanks to all that donated money, bought something at the auction in Denver, donated the heifer, sponsored buckles, bought ice and water or sponsored a lunch, we couldn’t do it without your support. Lastly thanks to Shane for always having the mic in his hand and reminding us to STAY HYDRATED!
We already have our next meeting scheduled and look forward to begin working on next year’s event!
Thanks again and have a great rest of your summer.
